Course Description:

In the UK Cerebral Palsy affects around 1 in every 400 children. It causes issues with movement, communication and often learning difficulties. Cerebral Palsy has many effects which can be physical, emotional, and psychological. 

This training is for anyone who supports individuals with Cerebral Palsy and will provide knowledge and understanding what Cerebral Palsy is, what causes it, associated character traits, misconceptions, and how to support individuals living with the condition.

Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

What this course offers:

  • Introduction to Cerebral Palsy

    • What is Cerebral Palsy?

    • Importance of early diagnosis

    • Causes of Cerebral Palsy

    • Associated character traits

    • Common misconceptions

    • The three main types Spastic (most common), athetoid, ataxic

  • Supporting the individual with Cerebral Palsy:

    • Adapting environments to accommodate those with Cerebral Palsy

    • Helping with communication

    • Changing needs throughout their life

    • VOCAs, passports and communication books

    • Disability protection legislation

    • Treating the physical impairment caused by Cerebral Palsy

    • Understand the complexity of the disability and how everyone is affected differently

    • Dealing with difficult behaviour

    • Multi Disability and Visual Impairment (MDVI)

    • Therapy physiotherapy, improving quality of life, helping families to cope, emotional effects, psychological effects

    • Encouraging social interaction and communication

    • Associated conditions

At the end of the training session, there is a written assessment to evidence the learning of the attendees.
