Learning Aims and Outcomes

Course Title:  Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) Awareness

Course length – 3 hours

Maximum number to attend – 12

This course is aimed at all staff working within Health and Social Care who are responsible for the day to day care of an individual with a PEG in situ.

The course will raise awareness and increase knowledge of PEG including administering medication and feeds.  The course includes a practical session on a manikin.

Assessment Criteria

What is a PEG

·         Identify and understand what a PEG is.

Indications

·         Understand the reasons for using gastrostomy tubes

Anatomy and Physiology

 

·         Describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the digestive system

Dysphagia

·         Identify signs and symptoms of dysphagia

Administering feeds, medication and flushing

 

·         Explain and understand how to administer feeds, medication and flushes safely (this does not include specific training on PEG feeding machines)

Complications

·         Describe the potential complications of using feeding tubes

Implications

 

·         Identify and understand the implications of administering medication through a gastrostomy

Mouth Care

·         Discuss appropriate and effective mouth care

Troubleshooting

·         Effectively troubleshoot potential problems of gastrostomy tubes

·         Identify when to seek help.

 

Competency sign off for staff can be arranged.  Please speak with the Sales Team to discuss your specific requirements

At the end of the training session, there is a written assessment to evidence the learning of the attendees.
