Course Title: Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) Awareness
Course length – 3 hours
Maximum number to attend – 12
This course is aimed at all staff working within Health and Social Care who are responsible for the day to day care of an individual with a PEG in situ.
The course will raise awareness and increase knowledge of PEG including administering medication and feeds. The course includes a practical session on a manikin.

· Identify and understand what a PEG is. |

Indications |
· Understand the reasons for using gastrostomy tubes |

Anatomy and Physiology
|
· Describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the digestive system |
|
Dysphagia |
· Identify signs and symptoms of dysphagia |
|
Administering feeds, medication and flushing
|
· Explain and understand how to administer feeds, medication and flushes safely (this does not include specific training on PEG feeding machines) |
|
Complications |
· Describe the potential complications of using feeding tubes |
|
Implications
|
· Identify and understand the implications of administering medication through a gastrostomy |
|
Mouth Care |
· Discuss appropriate and effective mouth care |
|
Troubleshooting |
· Effectively troubleshoot potential problems of gastrostomy tubes · Identify when to seek help. |

At the end of the training session, there is a written assessment to evidence the learning of the attendees.
