Learning Aims and Outcomes

Course Title:  Epilepsy Awareness

 Course length – 3 hours

Maximum number to attend – 12

This course is designed for all staff who are involved in the care and wellbeing of individuals with epilepsy.

The course aims to provide an understanding of the causes and triggers of seizures, identify seizure activity and appropriate action in the event of a seizure.

Introduction - Definition of Epilepsy

 

·         Understand:

o   What epilepsy is

o   Causes of Epilepsy

o   How Epilepsy is diagnosed

Seizures

 

·         Discuss:

  • Types of seizures
  • Signs and symptoms of seizures
  • Recovery position
  • Auras
  • Status Epilepticus
  • SUDEP
  • Triggers of seizures
  • What to do in an emergency

Treatment for Epilepsy

 

·         Identify the different treatment options including

  • AEDs
  • VNS
  • Ketogenic diet
  • Surgery

 

At the end of the training session, there is a written assessment to evidence the learning of the attendees.

This course can be tailored to the bespoke needs of the customer.
